On October 16th from 8 to 10pm One Common Unity will be holding their monthly Common Folk: Voices of a Movement Open Mic Night at Bus Boys and Poets. This month's theme will be the Military Industrial Complex.
In 2011, One Common Unity has been hosting the Voices of a Movement Community Open Mics on the 3rd Sunday of every month at Bus Boys and Poets in Washington, D.C at their 5th and K location. Those performing during the open mic are asked to compose, write and/or share work that is related to the topic of that particular show.

One Common Unity believes it is equally important to tell the stories of our heroes. The ones doing little things in great ways... everday... to make the world a better place. The stories of some of those inspiring people are found within these pages. Through the Common Folk Awards, we wish to connect you with their stories, their work, their vision, their hopes and dreams.
This year's Common Folk Awards will be held on December 6th at the Gala Theatre in Washington, DC. Awards are given out for best film, greenest business, peace builder, song, performance artist and more!
Nominations for the Common Folk Awards can be made by anyone and this year the people will decide the winners. Via an online poll you can choose which nominee best deserves the Common Folk Award for their category.

The Trust Factor 2011
The Trust Factor is a series of events to be held in Washington, DC, October 10-15, 2011, that demonstrate how people from diverse backgrounds have built trust and are collaborating to solve problems in their communities, our nation, and even internationally.
It will explore different locales and perspectives in the nation's capital. The events will be as varied as an interfaith dialogue on Spiritual Traditions as a Foundation for Trustbuilding at Georgetown University; an evening convened by the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network at American University on Trustbuilding Across Generations: Opportunities and Challenges, and a panel discussion by the Calvert Foundation on Redefining our Relationship to Money. A Trustbuilding Workshop will be offered to practitioners in the field.
Highlight of the week is a reception to honor three outstanding Trustbuilders at the community, national and international level on Friday, October 14. The program culminates with Saturday events that include skills-building workshops and a celebratory session for all participants to share new insights and to plan practical steps to carry forward The Trust Factor agenda for Washington, DC.

Community Organizing Training hosted by ONE DC
Do you want to build a social movement? Are you interested in community organizing? Do you want to further your skills?
Come to the Mini-Comhabee Drylongso Community Organizing Training on Saturday, August 20th from 10am to 5pm. Comhabee Drylongso is a traing that ONE DC provides to individuals and organizations to build campaigns and develop action plans. The training is based on conceptual skills and practical skills.

Becky's Fund is a DC based organization that works to prevent the causes of domestic and dating violence. They work to empower women of all ages to fight domestic violence and bring awareness to the causes in the DC area. To raise funds for Becky's fund, Citizen Effect is hosting Yoga Challenge this month. Several yoga studios have donated their services to help support this great cause! Please join Jospeh's House for the AIDS WALK Washington on Saturday, October 29, 2011. The walk serves to support and raise awarness about the struggles with AIDS/HIV in the Washington area. Joseph's House is a Community Partner with this year's AIDS Walk Washington, which is a 5km fundraising walk. As a community partner, Joseph's House gets to keep 50% of any money their team raises!
To register, go to www.aidswalkwashington.org. When registering, please remember to joing the Joseph's House team. There is a $25 registration fee and you can either walk or do the timed run. The run begins at 8:30am and the walk begins at 9:15am. They start and end at the Freedom Plaza. Please ask your friends and family to donate to your walk/run online.

This summer One Common Unity is launching a new youth program, Fly By Light. The program takes inner city high school students to the mountains of West Virginia for a life changing experience. Youth participating in this program will take part in workshops on leadership, non-violent communication, conflict resolution, personal growth, health and wellness, and music therapy. Additionally, they will be featured in a documentary film created around their experience with One Common Unity.

This weekend is National HIV Testing Day. Please join Joseph's House at the screening of "The Other City," a documentary about HIV and AIDS in DC and the grassroots activists that work to promote advocacy and understanding.
There are two showings: 1pm-4pm at Martin Luther King Library 901 G Street, NW or at 8pm (screening beginning at dusk) at the Harriet Tubman Elementary School 3101 13th Street, NW.
Free HIV testing will be at both sites. For more information on this amazing film, please see The Other City.
